Welcome to Monemvasia

Welcome to Monemvásia, as we, the locals call it, a town that has changed many names through the ages… The Franks called it Malvazi, the English Malmzi, the Venetians, Malvasia… Its name, deriving from the two words, “Moni” (+single) + “Emvasis” (=entrance), means the “Only Entrance” to the impressive settlement that was built on the rock, the Gate that will lead you “onboard” Giannis Ritsos’ “Stone Boat”, as the world famous local poet so lyrically described his home town. This enormous rock, an awe inspiring image in the eyes of the unsuspected traveler, surrounded by stone walls, welcomes you to the Laconic Land and promises amazing moments during this unique and magical journey through time.
